Between Aswan and Luxor is located the major Ptolemaic temple of Edfu - the best preserved major temple in Egypt. The temple is dedicated to the falcon god Horus and was built over a 180-year period from 237 BC to 57 BC. Just like everyone else, we were met off the cruise boat by a horse and carriage that took us to the temple. An early 20th century replica of a barque of Horus that would have sat in the Sanctuary. The nilometer was a device the government used to assess taxes based on the height of the river. The god Horus. The side of the temple. The area outside the temple is wall to wall tourist shops with aggressive storekeepers. And as always, garbage strewn about the road.
