St Catherine's Monastery at Mount Sinai, Egypt

From Cairo, we took a 12 hour bus ride (which our Lonely Planet claimed was 6 hours) to St Catherine's Monastery. The monastery is the easiest place to stay if you're going to hike to the summit of Mount Sinai. It was built at the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush. It is also known as the Monastery of the Transfiguration. This is the tower of the Orthodox Church of Mount Sinai.

Although the popular tourists thing to do is to climb the mountain in the early morning and watch the sun rise over the Sinai desert, we chose the much more relaxing option of walking up in peace after the crowds had come back down. Camels are also available to ferry tourists up most of the way.
There are two paths up and down the hill. The camel trail ends at the top of this hill and joins the Steps of Repentance trail for a steep scramble to the top.
These stalls are found all the way along the trail, selling water and food. Even at this last rest stop before the summit (5 minutes away), a big bottle of water was only $2.
This locked chapel stands at the summit.

We gave Wendy's grandmother a big thrill when we called her from the top of Mount Sinai. It was pretty amazing that our little Motorola V220 worked perfectly from the top in such a desolate place.

We walked back down the Steps of Repentence. In the distance you can see the Monastery. We just beat darkness getting back down.
