We arrived in Oslo in the afternoon. Our first stop was our friends' apartment. Then we dragged them along to see Frognerparken. Gustav Vigeland filled the park with his statues which depict the human life cycle. Apparently over 1 million people visit the park each year. This one pretty much speaks for itself. As does this one... Our 'tour guide' Heidi strikes a pose... The 'tour guides'. We don't know what happened to Dan. Somehow our camcorder turned him into a Southpark character. (Sorry, Dan!). The view from the far end of the park. That evening we stumbled across this opera being performed outside by the harbour. The stage was amazing. A fountain downtown. The next morning our first stop was the Viking museum. We had no idea that they carved such intricate designs into their boats. Apparently they built things other than ships, too. Next we headed for the Folkemuseum. It's a huge outdoor museum with buildings of different ages that have been brought together from all over Norway. The stuff you see sticking out from under the sod on the roof is birch bark, which makes the roof waterproof. The sod is insulation. This type of roofing is still in use and we saw it elsewhere. The fuzzy person is Heidi, our tour guide for the morning. This is the inside of the 'Radhus' or city hall. It's where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded every December 10th. The inside of the Oslo Domkirke (cathedral). It was finished in 1697. While in Oslo we also visited the Nasjonal Galleriet which had a collection we really enjoyed, and the Hjemmefrontmuseet (Resistance Museum) which documents Norway's efforts to subvert Nazi occupation.
