The flash glints off the rain coming off the tree.  They don't get this big without it raining a lot.  If we had a better scanner, you would be able to see the edge of the tree is near the left margin of the picture.  Trust us.

Coastal redwoods can live to be about 2000 years old, averaging about 500 to 700 years.  The tallest known redwood is 367.8 feet.  The base can be up to 22 feet in diameter.  Yet, their seed is the same size as a tomato's, and their cone is like a large olive!
