On our way to New Orleans, our first detour took us to the Apache Trail, a scenic route just outside Phoenix, Arizona. It is a spectacular twisted unpaved road that goes through the Tonto National Forest, the Theodore Roosevelt Lake, and the Superstition Mountains. This was taken on the way to Globe after the Apache Trail. The next day we headed to the Biosphere II, north of Tucson. The Biosphere is a science research project where they stuck a bunch of people in a self-contained environment and they had to survive for a few years with no outside help. Wendy really enjoyed this. There were many climates reproduced inside the dome. Unfortunately we couldn't go inside (something about contamination...) but it was interesting to see. Especially for Wendy. We visited the Saguaro National Park, just beside Tucson. The cacti stretched on for miles. The cacti can grow up to 50 feet over 150 years, and weigh over 10 tons. The flowers were beautiful on the teddy bear cholla. The cacti support a lot of the desert's wildlife. Next stop along the road was the Chiricahua National Monument. Amazing rock formations lined the road.
