>> El Jem (El Djem)
From Tunis, we headed south to El Jem. This is the first class cabin we were in. First class doesn't get you much, except a reserved seat, and air conditioning. (not that we needed it though!)
Walking through the town on the way to...
The Colosseum of El-Jem is a short walk away from the train station, and is the only reason to come here.
The incredibly well-preserved amphitheater is almost as big as the one in Rome. It dominates the town. It was built around AD 230.
Here is Wendy obeying the sign. We're guessing it used to say 'DANGER'.
The colosseum is a lot more accessible then the one in Rome - it's possible to explore almost everywhere. If you can brave the howling wind blowing the sand in your face. It was blowing so hard we had to time our stair climbing to periods of low wind, and cling on to the handrail as we were going up and down the stairs. December - not the time to visit.
Walking through the market on our way out of town. I liked the potato weight they were using.
Leaving to go south wasn't easy. The bus station didn't really exist - we just waited on the street for the 10 am bus that got there at 11:30 am.
