The Chott El-Jerid lies between Kebili and Tozeur. It's an immense salt lake covering 5000 sq. km. There are some stunning optical effects of mirages. Here, the water is completely indistinguishable from the sky, making it look like the sand was the edge of the earth. We passed on staying in Tozeur (not much to do) and made the big mistake of heading to Gafsa. Here Wendy is showing off our room in the Hotel Maamoun, the biggest stretch for a "three-star" hotel we've ever seen. There was actually blood on the wall in the first room we were given. According to the Lonely Planet, it's the best hotel in town. We really hope that's not true.
