Our First Trip – Italy

Waiting to board our flight to Rome.

In May, 1995, Ian and I set out on our first big adventure together.  We had a month to explore Europe and planned to visit 5 countries.  First up – our Italy tour.  We started in Rome, and then worked our way south down the Amalfi Coast, stopping near Amalfi for the night.  We spent a couple of days visiting the stunning island of Capri, and the gorgeous Blue Grotto.  From there we continued south to the world famous ruins of Pompeii.  Walking the streets was an amazing experience.  It was as if our high school history textbook had come to life!  From Pompeii we continued back north to Florence, where we explored the world famous Ufitzi Gallery and saw Michelangelo’s David.  Then, we continued on to Venice, where we ended our time in Italy with a visit to this beautiful floating city.

As the first country we visited together, Italy holds a special place in our hearts.  Some day we would love to return.  We very much want to do two more Italy tours – one to see the north of the country, including Pisa with it’s famous leaning tower and the second to see the amazing Puglia region, with its signature architecture – the trugli.
