>> Sharm-El-Sheikh, Red Sea
So as a holiday from our holiday, we stayed at the Sheraton Sharm for a couple of nights. The hotel is in Sham-el-Sheikh, which is a never-ending strip of hotels catering to vacationing Europeans.
La vie est dur.
Those are our ratty travelling clothes gettng the pristine linens dirty after the turn-down service.
Walking around the hotel, we felt we were the imposters. Everyone is dripping in jewelery, dressed to the nines, and we look like something the cat dragged in. Oh well. Good thing we've lived in the States long enough that we don't really care about that sort of thing any more.
Our balcony.
The hotel grounds.
The Sheraton Sharm is an absolutely beautiful hotel. Wow.
No matter where we looked, there was staff scurrying around cleaning, polishing, sweeping.. and it showed.
The only complaint was that the beach (as you walked into the ocean) was not sandy - there was coral. Oh, and it was too cold to swim in December...
But not too cold to enjoy the swim-up bar.
From our room, an overview of the pool.
Anyways, the other reason we were there was to do some snorkeling in the Red Sea. Speaking of Red, here's Santa waving us off on our dive boat. You could get your photo taken with him, and they would sell it to you for a good price, my friend.
The scenery is beautiful, if a little windy.
The snorkeling was impressive, but to be honest, we've seen better elsewhere, and it was much warmer. We're a little spoiled by the Carribean.
Back at the hotel, trying to soak up the last few rays. Notice how all the loungers are sideways - an improvised wind block the guests were using.
The sunrise from our room.
And now, back to reality of the kinds of places we usually stay in... This is at the Sunshine Hotel in Hurghada.
This is the Upper Egypt Travel bus we took from Hurghada into Luxor, after Sharm-el-Sheikh. The bus was in pretty rough shape. My seat had no back spring, so if I leaned back it would fall over on the person behind me. The front door was broken, and the back door had to be forced closed with an iron bar while the bus was moving.
Hopeful day laborers.
