Athens and Ancient Athens, Greece

Arriving from the airport, we were dropped off beside the Parliament building.

The Plaka district is packed with outdoor cafes and restaurants, here is a look down one of the pedestrian streets.

The Parthenon is lit up beautifully in the evening.
A nameless church (sorry :)
At night, the Plaka turns into a huge shopping area, with many souvenir shops as well as street vendors. It's quite a scene.
Obligatory Tourist Shot of the Parthenon

A lot of the statues have been 'borrowed' by the British and are now inside the British Museum, but they didn't manage to get quite everything.

The Caryatids support the south side of the Erechtheion. These are copies, the originals are on site in the non air-conditioned museum.
Peaking up at the Parthenon from the Ancient Agora below.
The flea market is bustling in Monastiraki.

Another view of the Parthenon, this time from the backside, from the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
The Temple of Zeus is mostly in ruins. It was incredibly hot with no shade anywhere.

We checked out the National Archaeological Museum
Inside the museum, the bronze of Poseidon from 460 BC.
The bronze jockey of Artemision. The statue represents a young man riding a horse. He probably held the reins in his left hand and a whip in the right. It was found in pieces, in the area of a shipwreck off the cape Artemision, in north Euboea. Dated to ca. 140 B.C.

Stray dogs are all over Athens. They weren't dangerous, and the people of Athens take care of them.
Wendy after finishing off another delicious (and huge) meal. In Athens, we really found ourselves living meal to meal!
