After Pamukkale we headed to Goreme in Cappadocia, "The Land of the Fairy Chimneys". We had originally planned to stop here, close to Isparta, to check out this huge lake in the middle of the country. Unfortunately, we got stuck in Denizli. Notice there aren't any photos of Denizli.

After Pamukkale we headed to Goreme in Capadoccia, "The Land of the Fairy Chimneys". We had originally planned to stop here, close to Isparta, to check out this huge lake in the middle of the country. Unfortunately, we got stuck in Denizli. Notice there aren't any photos of Denizli. As the sun set on our day of travelling, we could see Mount Hasan, an extinct stratovolcano (towering at 10,720ft above sea level), in the distance. In Goreme, we stayed in a "fairy chimney" room at the hotel. Inside our room. It has to be one of the coolest rooms we've ever stayed in. It even had a real shower! The region is dominated by strange volcanic rock formations, a lot of which were turned into cliff dwellings by early Christians escaping the Romans (in the 700s). In the morning we headed out to the Goreme Open Air Museum, just outside of town. There was a lot of churches in the caves, with beautiful frescoes. Another big attraction in the area are the underground caves. We visited Kaymakli. It is not known whether these huge underground cities were just used for temporary safety from invaders or for more permanent living, but they certainly had all they needed to to stay underground for a long time. We went for a sunset hike into the Rose Valley with a guide from the hotel. At one point we had to rappel, but luckily we found another way down. The other way down involved using the steps inside one of the cave dwellings. Here is Wendy and our guide just outside. Once inside the valley, we got some beautiful pictures as the sun set. On our way out of Goreme in the morning, we saw this carpet shop.
