>> Barcelona
We flew from France into Madrid, and then directly on to Barcelona.
Las Ramblas is the main street through the downtown area. The street is filled with street performers, souvenir sellers, and unfortunately, pickpockets.
At one end of Las Ramblas is Placa Catalunya.
This is the monument to Columbus at the other end of Las Ramblas. It proudly points towards Libya. Oops.
This is the port complex building.
In the background of the port is the aquarium and a shopping complex called Mare Magnum.
This is a picture of the road that runs beside the harbour.
We think this is the post office, but we could be wrong.
There is a huge pedestrian district in Barcelona. This is the entrance to Placa de Sant Jaume, which has been Barcelona's political center since Roman times.
We stumbled upon this outdoor market onto the way back to the hotel.
The next day, we headed to Parc Guell. We went up Baixada de la Gloria into the back entrance of the park. The street has a series of escalators to get you up the hill.
Thank God for escalators.
Parc Guell has the longest park bench in the world. The park was designed by Antoni Gaudi. It was originally intended to be a city within a city for Barcelona's elite, but when only two aristocrats signed on, became a park.
There is a great view out over Barcelona.
Notice the woman in the tree trunk
The Palau de la Musica Catalana was unfortunately closed, since no one showed up for work...
The Manzana De La Discordia, or the block of dischord, refers to the stylistic clashes of the three nighbouring buildings.
We visited the Casa Mila, which is an apartment building designed by Gaudi. We took a tour.
The roof was spectacular.
This is the Iglesia Del Pi.
The half-finished Sagrada Familia is another one of Gaudi's creations. Construction continues in ernest today.
Apparently there's a big sex scandal surrounding this sculpture. Some people think the artist depicted Jesus enjoying this pose a little too much...
This is the back of the church.
Another shot of the back.
We went back to Park Guell to get some sunny shots.
Here is a close-up of one of the benches at Parc Guell.
