Douz borders the Sahara. It turns out that we were there for the International Festival of the Sahara - thus making getting a room a little more challenging then we had anticipated. We ended up sleeping in the kitchenstaff's room in one of the hotels. Some of the people we met had made hotel reservations 6 months in advance so they could see the opening cermonies of the festival. And then there was us, who just showed up, not believing the taxi-driver's "Oh but it's a festival day", thinking he was just trying to get us to sleep at his cousin's hotel instead. The events of the Sahara Festival (Festival international du Sahara) take place mostly at the Place du Festival. There were amazing horsemanship displays, country presentations, camel racing competitions, some poor bunny rabbit being chased by a dog, camels breaking free from their handlers and heading for the open desert behind. After the opening ceremonies were over, we went down to the field and got some close-up photos of the participants in their full livery. We headed to the Grand Dune (right next to the Festival Grandstand). I think almost every camel from within a 100 mile radius of the town was there (regardless of age or health) pressed into service to carry tourists for 1 hour 'treks' into the desert. We passed. It is said that the grand dune (we were standing on top of) is suspciously close to all the big expensive tourist hotels... The Sahara is beautiful, but it doesn't even come close to what we saw in Morocco (Erfoud) On our way back to town, we saw a little kid's amusement center had been built right next to a market selling handicrafts and food from the participants home regions. Intently watching a foosball game. Here I am playing the game of toss the ring around the bottle of Coke, and win the Coke!
