Roseau Overview and the Farmers Market

Roseau is not the nicest city and isn’t representative of Dominica- when we were there, there was a lot of drunks and vagrants always wandering around. The city is fairly easy to navigate – it has a simple grid system. There are no sights as such in Roseau except for the farmers market, although it makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area, and hotel prices are a lot better here then elsewhere in the island. We did check out the farmers market and picked up some good fruit there, but there wasn’t

anything in the way of souvenirs.

To understand Roseau, you need to read the history first. Check out the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Anglican Church, The Fort Young Hotel (once a fort and a prison), the Public Library, the Botanical Gardens, the Old Market Plaza where slaves were once hanged, the ‘French Quarter’ old architecture. I also suggest that you buy a copy of the Dominica Story by Lennox Honychurch (available on Amazon) to get a better insight into Dominica. Dominica is a difficult country (terrain-wise) but rich in history and culture – not just natural beauty.

The site of Roseau is not what you have to look for when you enter the country. As the previous person said, you have to know the heritage of the place for you to truly understand it’s purpose and meaning…so next time ignore the drunkards and focus on the rich culture of the Country and the City itself

We seem to have left you with the impression that we did not enjoy our time in Roseau. On the contrary we had a good time there and found most people to be warm and welcoming. Every country and city has its problems. We simply reported what we saw.
