Spy Valley’s cellar door is open 7 days a week.  It’s sleek modern style showcases huge windows with sweeping views of the grapes with which they make their delicious wine.  Spy Valley was one of the few New Zealand wineries that we found exported to California.

We tried these wines:

2009 Sauvignon Blanc $17NZD – Fruity with a fruity finish.  Made with fruit from their own and contracted vineyards.

2009 Riesling – Fruity with lots of pineapple, tangerines and other citrus.

Envoy Riesling – A bit on the sweeter side, REALLY NICE. 🙂

2009 Pinot Gris – Unspectacular.

2007 Envoy Pinot Gris – Very easy to drink.

2008 Gewürztraminer – A little on the spicy side.

2008 Un-oaked Chardonnay – Not great, we were disappointed.

2007 Oaked Chardonnay – Very different to what we’re used to in California.  Very dry.

Envoy Chardonnay – Oaked for 18 months.

2008 Pinot Noir – Not good.  Too light for our taste.

2007 Envoy Pinot Noir – Okay

2007 Merlot – Nicer than we expected.  More similar to the red wine we’re used to in California.

2009 Noble Chardonnay – A great dessert wine!  Very juicy and sweet without being overpowering.

2009 Noble Sauvignon Blanc – Another Spy Valley dessert wine offering.  We weren’t as impressed with this one.

As you can see, we were able to taste a LOT of different kinds of wine!  The tasting room was very quiet when we were there and the atmosphere very relaxed.  As the designated driver, Wendy was offered a complimentary coffee – which we thought was a nice touch!
